Rising Diabetes Cases in Himachal Pradesh, Children Also at Risk
Shimla: In Himachal Pradesh, 11-13% of the population aged 30 and above is affected by diabetes, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). In addition, nearly 20% are in a pre-diabetic stage. Experts warn that diabetes is no longer limited to the elderly or affluent; young adults and children are also increasingly at risk.
Dr. Manish Thakur, an endocrinologist at a super specialty hospital, stated that lifestyle changes, unhealthy diet, excessive sugar intake, irregular sleep, stress, and lack of physical activity are major contributors to rising diabetes cases. Research shows that regular exercise, balanced diet, and active participation in sports can reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes by up to 58%.
Preventive Measures:
- Adults: 150 minutes of exercise per week; Children: 1 hour of outdoor play daily
- Increase intake of whole grains, millets, fruits, and vegetables
- Reduce sugary and fried foods
- Ensure at least 8 hours of sleep daily
- Practice yoga or meditation for stress management
- Get annual blood sugar tests after 30 years of age
