352 Crore Unclaimed in Himachal Pradesh Banks; Special Campaign Launched by Bankers Committee
Around 10.77 lakh account holders in Himachal Pradesh have left ₹352 crore dormant in banks. Due to no transactions for several years, these funds have been transferred to the Reserve Bank of India’s special fund. SBI accounts hold ₹119 crore, PNB ₹69 crore, and UCO Bank ₹36 crore in unclaimed deposits.
District-wise, Kangra tops the list with ₹74.77 crore in 2.25 lakh inactive accounts, followed by Shimla, Mandi, and Solan. The Himachal government also has ₹26.72 crore in 9,456 dormant accounts across various departments.
The State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) has launched a special drive to trace and return these funds. In October, ₹7.95 crore was returned to 1,026 account holders. The campaign aims to raise awareness and ensure rightful claimants receive their money.
SLBC chief Deepak Kumar emphasized that banks and insurance companies should actively trace dormant accounts, fixed deposits, PF, and insurance claims, conducting awareness camps at village and ward levels, and using online portals.
Precautions:
- Make periodic transactions in your account
- Keep mobile number and Aadhaar updated
- Check accounts via passbook/net banking
