Tanda Medical College Makes History with Himachal’s First Successful Robotic Rectal Cancer Surgery
Tanda Medical College has added another golden chapter to Himachal Pradesh’s medical history by successfully performing the state’s first robotic rectal (colon) cancer surgery using advanced technology. This remarkable achievement marks a moment of pride for the institution and brings new hope for cancer patients in the region.
The surgery was performed on a 51-year-old woman from Nurpur who had been battling rectal cancer for a long time. The complex procedure was carried out successfully by Dr. Ankit Shukla (Gastro Surgeon) and Dr. Mahendra Rana (Minimal Access, Laparoscopic, and Robotic Surgeon) along with their team. The patient’s condition is stable, and doctors expect a speedy recovery.
According to Dr. Rana, robotic surgery is preferred in cancer cases because it offers greater precision, enhanced visibility, and minimal blood loss compared to traditional surgical methods.
So far, Tanda Medical College has performed over 30 robotic surgeries, including complex procedures related to the pancreas, hernia, and gynecology. College Principal Dr. Milap Sharma and MLA Kewal Singh Pathania congratulated the team for this milestone.
What is Rectal Cancer:
The rectum is the final part of the large intestine. When its cells grow uncontrollably and form a tumor, it is known as rectal cancer. Common symptoms include changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, abdominal pain, weight loss, and fatigue. Diagnosis involves colonoscopy, MRI, CT scan, and biopsy, while treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted drug therapy.
