Himachal Pradesh: Panchayati Raj election schedule likely to be announced by month-end, preparations completed by Election Commission
The schedule for the Panchayati Raj institution elections in Himachal Pradesh is likely to be announced by the end of this month. The State Election Commission has completed all preparations for the polls. The elections are expected to be conducted based on the 2011 Census data. However, in districts affected by natural calamities and damaged roads, the elections may be deferred.
The state government is currently working on the reorganization of wards, a process that may take some additional time. The tenure of the current Panchayati Raj institutions will end in January 2026, and both the government and the commission are keen on conducting the elections on time.
The Commission has instructed district election officers and deputy commissioners to remain fully prepared. The process of ward delimitation is nearly complete. The government has clarified that no new panchayats will be created in the state. Himachal currently has 3,577 gram panchayats, and this number will remain unchanged.
The government will soon decide whether to introduce a new reservation roster or continue with the existing rotation-based system. Complaints have also been received regarding some panchayats where certain seats have remained reserved for women for multiple terms, and the government is examining these cases.
