"Himachal Pradesh to Monitor Traffic via Cameras: Fines via Number Plate Recognition, Fewer Accidents Expected"

Centralized Traffic Management System to Roll Out in Himachal Pradesh; E-Challans to Track Violations

Himachal Pradesh has initiated the process of implementing a Centralized Traffic Management System (ITMS). In the first phase, the system is being introduced in 13 out of the state’s 15 police districts, excluding Lahaul-Spiti and Dehra.

Under ITMS, traffic will be monitored through cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems, and traffic violators will receive automated electronic fines (e-challans) sent to their mobile phones via SMS.

CCTV, speed detection systems, red-light violation systems, and traffic analytics software will automatically record violations such as signal jumping, overspeeding, and failure to wear helmets or seat belts, with data securely stored on a central server.

Command and control centers will be established in each district headquarters to monitor traffic 24/7. The collected data will help not only in issuing fines but also in identifying high-traffic areas and planning traffic routes, road construction, and congestion management strategies. ITMS will make traffic policing more digital, transparent, and efficient, enhancing road safety, reducing congestion, and improving overall transport management.
