"Shimla-Kalka Track: An Exciting Journey Through 102 Tunnels and 122 Years of History"

Shimla-Kalka Railway Enters Its 123rd Year

The Shimla-Kalka railway track entered its 123rd year on November 9, 2025. This heritage track continues to offer an exciting journey for tourists. The first train ran on this track on November 9, 1903, powered by a steam engine during the British era.

In 1970, steam engines were retired, and trains began operating with diesel engines. Today, the route offers regular coaches along with Vistadome coaches and rail motor cars. Passengers can enjoy comfortable seating and panoramic views in the Vistadome coaches.

The railway is also planning to introduce hydrogen-powered trains. Three hydrogen fueling stations will be established along the Shimla-Kalka route. Hydrogen trains are considered pollution-free and environmentally friendly.

The track spans 96.60 kilometers, featuring 18 stations, 102 tunnels, and 912 bridges. The Barog Tunnel is the longest, measuring 1,143 meters. In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi also traveled on this route.

UNESCO designated the Shimla-Kalka railway as a World Heritage Site on July 8, 2008. The Guinness Book of Railway Facts and Photos recorded it as India’s greatest small-line engineering marvel.

According to DRM Ambala, the railway is preparing to run self-propelled hydraulic multiple unit trains and hydrogen trains soon, promising an even more thrilling experience for tourists.
