A devastating fire struck the family of Thakur Jogendra Singh in Talangna village, Sirmour district, Himachal Pradesh, on the night of January 14. The tragedy claimed the lives of Jogendra Singh’s daughter-in-law Kavita, grandson Kritik, and two granddaughters Kritika and Sarika. His son Lokendra Singh was also severely burned. The incident has cast a pall of grief over Bijjar village.
The remains of the deceased were identified through DNA testing and handed over to the family. Villagers collected the remains from Talangna, and on Friday morning, all were cremated on a single pyre, with family members in tears. Lokendra’s brother Yashwant and nephews Bani and Akshay performed the last rites.
Lokendra’s uncle Amar Singh Thakur said that Lokendra had gone to his in-laws’ home in Ghandori to celebrate the Maghi festival with his wife and children. His mother-in-law Indra Devi was staying in Talangna and had invited them over. When the fire broke out, Lokendra broke a window with an iron rod to escape, while six people sleeping in another room were trapped and burned alive.
