Himachal: 1,019 Seats Vacant in Private B.Ed Colleges This Session, Some Institutions Considering Closing Courses

Himachal: 1,019 Seats Vacant in Private B.Ed Colleges, Institutions Face Financial Loss

In the 2025–26 session, private B.Ed colleges affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) filled 5,031 seats, but 1,019 seats remained vacant. This comes despite efforts by several colleges to fill seats through measures such as 10% marks relaxation, online counseling, and offline spot counseling.

The issue is particularly severe in private colleges. Around 840 seats under the Himachal quota and 179 under the management quota remain vacant in these institutions. This has led to a significant drop in revenue, making it difficult for colleges to manage teacher salaries, infrastructure, and other expenses.

Several colleges have indicated that if the situation continues in the next session, they may consider removing the B.Ed course from their curriculum.

HPU had taken measures such as 10% marks relaxation and spot counseling to fill seats. However, a large number of seats remained vacant. Officials cite declining student interest, high fees, and limited job opportunities after B.Ed as the main reasons.

Experts suggest that the university and the state education department need to take urgent steps to address this growing problem.
