HP Govt CBSE Schools to Enforce Strict Teacher–Student Ratio, Class-wise Student Limit Fixed
The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to strictly enforce the teacher–student ratio in 130 government schools operating under the CBSE pattern. To ensure quality education, the state has laid down stringent norms regarding student strength and teacher deployment in CBSE schools.
Under the new framework, two sections have been made mandatory for every class from Nursery to Class 12. In addition, the maximum number of students per section has also been fixed. Each section will have a maximum of 30 students from Nursery to Class 5, 35 students from Class 6 to 8, and 40 students from Class 9 to 12.
The government believes that overcrowded classrooms adversely affect teaching quality and limit teachers’ ability to give individual attention to students. As per the new norms, a CBSE school with around 1,250 students must have at least 72 teachers, including subject-specific teachers at the primary, middle, and senior secondary levels.
Education Secretary Rakesh Kanwar stated that the move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which focuses on stress-free, concept-based, and quality education. Fixed student strength will make classrooms more interactive and provide teachers with greater scope for innovative teaching methods.
The decision is also expected to bring relief to parents, as smaller class sizes will enable better monitoring of students’ progress and provide additional support to weaker learners. The norms will be implemented in a phased manner across all CBSE schools. Priority will be given to creating new posts and making appointments where there is a shortage of teachers or infrastructure. The decision is being seen as a significant step towards ensuring discipline, quality, and equal educational opportunities in Himachal Pradesh.
