Himachal News: Plans to Create 68 New Panchayats, Total 250 Panchayats to Be Open

Himachal: Approval for 68 New Panchayats, Boost to Rural Administration and Representation

Himachal Pradesh is preparing to create 68 new panchayats following requests from legislators. The Chief Minister’s Office has approved the decision, and the Panchayati Raj Department will now complete the formal process for establishing these proposed panchayats.

The formation of new panchayats addresses long-standing demands. Several MLAs had proposed the reorganization of existing panchayats and the creation of new ones in their constituencies. Previously, 4 new panchayats were created, followed by approval for 39 panchayats, and public suggestions were sought for 84 more. Now, the government has decided to create 68 additional panchayats, which will further increase the total number of panchayats in the state.

The new panchayats are expected to improve administration and the implementation of development programs in rural areas. Residents will have better access to facilities and schemes at the local panchayat level.

Additionally, around 250 panchayats in the state have had their Sarpanch positions reserved for women or other reserved categories for the past two to three terms. The government has decided to remove the reservation for these seats. With the upcoming panchayat elections, this step is seen as crucial for ensuring a transparent electoral process and equal opportunities for all sections of society.

Panchayati Raj Minister Aniruddh Singh stated that an assessment of the panchayats was conducted before presenting the matter to the Cabinet. The formation of new panchayats will follow the roster, keeping the tenure of the panchayats in mind.
