Himachal Issues Fresh Notification on Ward Delimitation for Urban Bodies, Finalized for Upcoming Elections
Ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in Himachal Pradesh, the State Election Commission has reissued and finalized the ward delimitation for five urban bodies. Previously, on May 24, 2025, the program for delimitation of wards in 73 urban bodies was released and later published in the official gazette on July 4 and 14, 2025.
However, petitions were filed in the High Court regarding the creation, upgradation, and inclusion of areas in some urban bodies. Anil Khachi, Commissioner of the State Election Commission, stated that the High Court had nullified the government notifications in these cases and directed that objections raised by petitioners be heard and decisions issued in accordance with the law.
Following this, the Urban Development Department heard the objections and the government issued the final notifications regarding the reorganization of these urban bodies. The urban bodies included in this process are:
- Kangra district: Municipal Council Jwalamukhi and Municipal Panchayat Nagrota Surian
- Solan district: Municipal Corporation Baddi and Municipal Panchayat Kunihar
- Hamirpur district: Municipal Panchayat Barsar
The State Election Commission clarified that there has been no change in the geographical area of these urban bodies and the population is based on the 2011 census. Therefore, there was no need for a fresh ward delimitation, and the previously notified delimitation has been finalized for the upcoming general elections.
