Himachal: Anand Sharma Speaks Out After Not Being Named Rajya Sabha Candidate
After not being named as a Rajya Sabha candidate from Himachal Pradesh, Congress leader Anand Sharma issued his first statement on Thursday. In a conversation with news agency ANI, Sharma said, "I would not say I am disappointed, but self-respect is very costly in politics. Speaking the truth is often considered a crime… Those who make the decisions have the authority and only they can clarify. Representing the state and the country for decades has been a matter of pride for me. I will always stand with the people of Himachal Pradesh. Anand Sharma can never be stopped from speaking the truth… I will not take this matter to the high command, and I will not discuss it with them."
Anand Sharma has been active in politics for nearly 50 years. In the last Lok Sabha elections, he contested from the Kangra parliamentary seat as a Congress candidate but lost. He has also served as the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
Sharma, who hails from Shimla, served as a Union Minister in Manmohan Singh’s two governments. He has been a Rajya Sabha member twice each from Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan and is regarded as a national-level leader. In 1982, he contested from the Shimla Urban Assembly constituency but lost to a BJP candidate.
