Himachal Gets New Governor: Kavindra Gupta Appointed, Shivpratap Shukla Assigned to Telangana

Kavindra Gupta Appointed as Himachal Governor; Shiv Pratap Shukla Moves to Telangana

Jammu’s Kavindra Gupta, former Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh, has been appointed as the new Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Meanwhile, the current Governor of Himachal, Shiv Pratap Shukla, has been assigned to Telangana. Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena will take over Kavindra Gupta’s previous responsibilities.

President Draupadi Murmu has appointed new governors in three states and also ordered several transfers. According to a press release from Rashtrapati Bhavan, West Bengal Governor Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose resigned on Thursday, which the President accepted. R.N. Ravi, currently the Governor of Tamil Nadu, will take additional charge of West Bengal.

Kavindra Gupta took oath as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh on July 18, 2025, and served for less than eight months. His political career spans decades, including roles such as Secretary of Punjab University in 1978, State President of BJYM in 1993, Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation in 2005, Speaker of Jammu & Kashmir Assembly in 2015, and Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir in 2018.

Meanwhile, Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as Maharashtra Governor. Senior BJP leader from Bihar, Nand Kishore Yadav, will now serve as Governor of Nagaland, and retired Lt. Gen. Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as Bihar Governor.

On taking charge as Himachal Governor, Kavindra Gupta expressed his gratitude, saying, “I sincerely thank the President, Prime Minister, and Home Minister for this opportunity.”
