Rajya Sabha Election: Congress Nominates Anurag Sharma from Kangra-Chamba, Aiming for Regional and Caste Balance
For the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, Congress has announced Anurag Sharma as its candidate from Baijnath in Kangra, aiming to maintain both regional and caste balance in the Kangra-Chamba parliamentary constituency. The current MP, Indu Goswami, is nearing the end of her term. As she belongs to the Brahmin community, the party has chosen a new candidate from the same community, signaling continued representation for Brahmins in the state government.
Out of the 15 assembly seats in Kangra district, Congress currently holds 10. Two of its MLAs—Chaudhary Chandr Kumar (OBC) and Yadavendra Goma (Scheduled Caste)—have already been made ministers, reflecting the state government’s ongoing efforts to maintain caste balance.
The Kangra-Chamba Lok Sabha constituency holds significant political importance. Brahmins form a substantial portion of the electorate, and the BJP also has a strong presence. The BJP had earlier nominated Dr. Rajiv Bhardwaj, a Brahmin, as the Lok Sabha MP, alongside Dr. Harsh Mahajan and Indubala Goswami as Rajya Sabha MPs.
Anurag Sharma became the Kangra District Congress President in January 2026. With his nomination to the Rajya Sabha, the party will need to appoint a new district president. Sharma will be the second consecutive leader from Baijnath to reach the upper house, following Indu Goswami in 2020.
Sharma began his political journey in student politics and has held multiple positions in NSUI, Youth Congress, and the Pradesh Congress Committee. He currently serves on the Vigilance and Prevention Committee of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation and has also been president of the Billing Paragliding Association. Sharma remains active in social and sports initiatives in the region.राज्यसभा चुनाव: कांग्रेस ने अनुराग शर्मा को बनाया कांगड़ा-चंबा क्षेत्र का उम्मीदवार, क्षेत्रीय और जातीय संतुलन साधा
