Heritage: Suburbs of Queen of Hills Shimla Still Known by British-Era Names, City Founded by the British

Shimla Suburbs Still Known by British-Era Names, Adding Unique Heritage and Tourism Value

Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh and the summer capital during British rule, remains famous for its suburbs and residential colonies with British-era names even 78 years after independence. Tourists are often surprised to learn the English names of buildings, colonies, and neighborhoods.

These names are not just used in casual conversation but are also reflected in official documents and administrative work. While some building names, such as Ripon and Lady Reading, were changed after independence, the names of suburbs and colonies have largely remained unchanged. Attempts to rename them have repeatedly failed.

Shimla spans seven hills – Jakhoo Hill, Inverarm Hill, Observatory Hill, Prospect Hill, Summer Hill, Bantony Hill, and Elysium Hill. Popular tourist spots include The Ridge, Mall Road, Scandal Point, Balu Ganj, Annadel, Auckland, Viceroy Lodge, and Summer Hill. Other suburbs like Strawberry Hills, Tolland, Himaland, Calston, Longwood, Oakwood, Oakover, North Oak, and Bothwell still retain their British-era names.

Many original names of areas are little known to residents. For example, Balu Ganj was originally Tilak Nagar, and Ganj Road is now officially Bhagat Singh Road.

The identity of several areas in Shimla is also linked to historic buildings. Names such as US Club, Kennedy House, BCS, Lady Reading, and British Resort now represent the entire neighborhoods.

According to noted historian Raja Bhasin, no old records of Shimla exist. The British founded the city and named its locations. These names have remained iconic for decades, forming a vital part of Shimla’s heritage and identity.
