Himachal to Merge 10 Government Colleges with Fewer Than 75 Students into Nearby Colleges
The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to merge 10 government colleges with fewer than 75 students into nearby colleges. The colleges affected include Tikker, Kupvi, and Nankhadi in Shimla; Sandhol and Kotli in Mandi; Haripur Guler and Multhan in Kangra; Bhalei in Chamba; Jaynagar in Solan; and Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti.
According to the Higher Education Department, the low student strength in these colleges led to inefficient use of resources. After the merger, students will be admitted to nearby colleges, and teachers and staff will be reassigned to institutions where their services are needed. Education Minister Rohit Thakur stated that the move will improve teaching quality and ensure better resource utilization.
Earlier, the government had proposed merging colleges with fewer than 100 students, but after opposition, the threshold was reduced to 75. As a result, 11 colleges are no longer included in the merger plan.
