Himachal mein packing ka khel: sasta dikhane ke liye kam kiya desi ghee aur refined tel ka wajan, jaane naye rate

Packaging Game in Himachal: Reduced Quantity Sold as “Cheaper” Products, Customers Misled

Consumers are advised to check the weight before purchasing refined oil or desi ghee being sold at unusually lower prices. In markets across Shimla, companies are introducing new packaging strategies that reduce quantity instead of increasing prices directly.

Refined oil is now being sold in 600 ml, 700–750 ml, and 910 ml packs.

  • 600 ml: ₹115–120
  • 700–750 ml: ₹130–140
  • 910 ml: ₹160–170

Earlier, the 910 ml refined oil pack was available for ₹120–130. Now it costs up to ₹160. Meanwhile, the ₹120 pack available today contains only 600 ml instead of 910 ml. Similar-looking packaging often makes it difficult for customers to identify the difference without carefully checking the label.

According to traders and the president of Shimla Vyapar Mandal, both customers and shopkeepers are facing confusion due to multiple packaging formats. Many buyers claim that other shops are offering oil ₹20–30 cheaper, unaware that the weight differs.

The trend is not limited to edible oil. Biscuits, rusks, and other grocery items are also being sold in reduced quantities at the same price. A ₹10 biscuit pack that earlier contained eight biscuits now often contains only five.

Desi Ghee Prices:

  • 800 grams: ₹400–450
  • 1 kilogram: ₹530–650

Officials from the District Food and Civil Supplies Department state that earlier standard packaging rules ensured uniform weight. Now, pricing is determined per unit, allowing companies to introduce varied packaging sizes. However, government ration depots continue to provide products in standard one-kilogram packs.
