Shimla-Delhi Police Clash: BJP Demands Probe, Sharp Exchanges Between BJP and Congress
Shimla: The clash between Shimla and Delhi Police over arrests during AI Summit-2026 has sparked a heated political debate. On Thursday, the BJP submitted a memorandum to Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla demanding a high-level investigation through the central government, an independent probe into the role of the Chief Minister’s office, and action against responsible officials.
Led by Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, the BJP delegation alleged that Delhi Police’s lawful action was interfered with, undermining the federal structure. Thakur claimed that some Youth Congress members allegedly staged a semi-nude protest during the AI Summit, tarnishing India’s image. He also alleged that the protest was orchestrated under the directions of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, and that the accused were provided political shelter in Himachal Pradesh.
Thakur further stated that Delhi Police arrested the accused—Saurabh Singh, Arbaaz, and Siddharth—from Rohru’s Chanshal Valley. He questioned how individuals with no permanent ties to Himachal reached the state and whether they received political protection.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sukhu’s principal media advisor Naresh Chauhan stated that Himachal Police acted according to protocol and lawfully intercepted the Delhi Police team. Chauhan added that Jai Ram Thakur should have consulted legal experts before making statements.
Himachal BJP President Rajeev Bindal criticized the state government, claiming the situation shows anarchy, favoritism, and constitutional mismanagement. On the other hand, Himachal Congress President Vinay Kumar accused the Modi government of curbing freedom of expression, stating that attempts to stop the Youth Congress’s peaceful protest reflected the center’s panic and authoritarian tendencies.
