Himachal: Tetanus and Diphtheria Vaccines to Be Administered Intramuscularly, Prices Reduced

Himachal: Indigenous TD Vaccine by CRI Kasauli to Be Administered Intramuscularly

The Central Research Institute (CRI) Kasauli has developed an indigenous Tetanus and Diphtheria (TD) vaccine, which will now be administered intramuscularly. This means people can receive the vaccine in their shoulder or hip as per convenience, and the cost will be minimal.

The vaccine will be procured by the state government and included under the Universal Immunization Program (UIP). It will provide protection against tetanus and diphtheria to pregnant women and adults. The aim is to maintain maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination and strengthen immunity through routine vaccination.

Earlier, the vaccine was only given to children, but with increased dosage, adults and pregnant women can also receive it. By April, CRI Kasauli is expected to produce 5.5 million doses, ensuring easy availability in hospitals.

The institute has obtained marketing authorization and licenses for production and sale. The Central Drug Laboratory (CDL) has also validated the vaccine’s quality and reliability.

Now, separate vaccines for tetanus and diphtheria are no longer required, as both diseases can be prevented with a single dose. CRI scientists began research on this vaccine in 2016, and after overcoming challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has proven to be effective.

What is Intramuscular Injection:
An intramuscular (IM) injection is a method of delivering medication directly into a muscle. Typically, it is administered in the shoulder, thigh, or hip muscles.
