Shortage of Specialists and Equipment in 40 Model Hospitals of Himachal, Health Minister Speaks

Shortage of Specialist Doctors and Equipment in Himachal’s Model Hospitals, Government Takes Steps for Improvement

Himachal Pradesh’s model hospitals are facing a shortage of specialist doctors and essential medical equipment. Out of 70 model hospitals, 30 have 6 specialists each, while the remaining 40 hospitals have four or fewer specialists. Paramedical staff is also insufficient, forcing patients to travel long distances to district hospitals and medical colleges for treatment.

The state government had decided in the 2025-26 budget session to establish model hospitals in every assembly constituency. The plan included deploying six specialists per hospital and providing necessary machinery and equipment to ensure patients receive modern healthcare locally, saving both time and money.

Health Minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil stated that recently a decision has been taken to recruit 300 doctors and nurses and purchase essential equipment. The model hospitals will have specialists in gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, surgery, radiology, and general medicine, along with adequate nursing and paramedical staff.

He added that tenders for the procurement of modern medical equipment and the deployment of specialist doctors are underway to ensure high-quality healthcare facilities in the model hospitals.
