Himachal: Proposal to Increase Urban Water Tariffs Under Review, Centre’s Conditions Discussed
Shimla: Water supply in urban areas of Himachal Pradesh may soon become costlier as the state government reviews a proposal to increase water tariffs. A meeting chaired by Urban Development Secretary Devesh Kumar at the state secretariat discussed the proposed hike in detail. Officials from the Urban Development and Jal Shakti departments presented data on rising operational costs, maintenance expenses, and the current status of urban water management.
Sources indicate that the government is considering revising tariffs in view of financial pressures and the need to maintain service quality. A final decision may be taken in the upcoming cabinet meeting. If approved, the revised rates will impact urban consumers across the state.
A separate state-level pre-screening committee meeting was also held to review the requirement of pipes and other materials for the 2025-26 financial year. Jal Shakti Department Secretary Abhishek Jain directed officials to assess actual needs and ensure transparency and quality in implementation.
During the recent budget session of the state assembly, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri stated that the Centre has set a condition for releasing the remaining Jal Jeevan Mission funds, requiring a minimum monthly water charge. The ministry has suggested a minimum bill of ₹100 per month, with ₹30 for economically weaker sections. He added that of the ₹6,395 crore approved earlier, ₹5,167 crore was received while ₹1,227 crore remains pending.
The state government is currently examining all aspects before taking a final decision.
