Himachal: JP Nadda Launches Tetanus and Diphtheria Vaccine at CRI

Jagat Prakash Nadda Launches TD Vaccine at Central Research Institute Kasauli

Kasauli/Shimla: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday launched the Tetanus and Diphtheria (TD) vaccine at the Central Research Institute (CRI) in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. He flagged off 1.5 million doses of the vaccine for market release, after which its supply will begin.

The event was attended by Shimla MP Suresh Kumar Kashyap and former Health Minister Rajeev Saizal, among other dignitaries. Nadda congratulated the scientists of CRI, stating that the vaccine would prove to be a game changer for the country. Earlier, separate vaccines were administered for tetanus and diphtheria, but the new TD vaccine offers combined protection against both serious diseases, reducing mortality and complications.

He noted that the institute has successfully completed the manufacturing and testing process, and the vaccine will now be available under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). Nadda described the launch as a major step toward strengthening national health security and advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India in the healthcare sector.

He further announced that in 2026, CRI Kasauli will contribute 5.5 million doses of the TD vaccine under the UIP. Plans are also underway to expand the institute’s operational capacity.

Highlighting the scale of India’s immunization efforts, Nadda said the Universal Immunization Programme is the world’s largest vaccination drive, providing 11 types of vaccines to protect against 12 preventable diseases, marking a significant achievement in public health.
