Jairam Thakur Accuses Congress Government of Politicizing Himachal’s Financial Crisis
In Shimla, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur addressed a press conference targeting the Congress and Sukhhu government. He stated that although the Congress government has been receiving full support from the central government, attention-diverting remarks against the Prime Minister and the Centre are being made.
Thakur held the current Congress government responsible for the suspension of the Revenue Deficit Grant (RDG). He said that following the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission, the Congress should manage finances effectively and steer the state forward. Blaming the Centre or previous governments alone does not solve the problem.
He criticized the presentation of facts by the Chief Minister in the Assembly, noting that when the opposition tried to correct them, permission was denied, forcing BJP MLAs to stage a walkout in protest.
Thakur emphasized that mere political speeches cannot solve the financial crisis; concrete policies and financial discipline are needed. Citing data, he highlighted that during the UPA government, Himachal received around ₹18,000 crore, whereas under the Modi government, it received approximately ₹89,254 crore—over five times more.
He also questioned the inconsistency in the CM’s figures on loans and repayments. During the BJP tenure, around ₹40,672 crore was borrowed and ₹38,276 crore repaid.
Concluding, Jairam Thakur said that the BJP is always ready to cooperate, but if Congress tries to gain political advantage using misleading figures, the BJP will respond with facts and data.
