Grand Celebration in McLeodganj Marks 14th Dalai Lama’s 86th Birthday; Kailash Satyarthi Suggests ‘Dalai Lama Pilgrimage Site’
A grand ceremony was held on Sunday at the Tsuglagkhang Monastery in McLeodganj by the Central Tibetan Administration to mark the 86th birthday of Tibetan Buddhist leader Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama. Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi attended the event as the chief guest.
Satyarthi said that whenever he visits McLeodganj and the Tsuglagkhang Monastery, it feels like a pilgrimage. He suggested renaming McLeodganj as the ‘Dalai Lama Pilgrimage Site.’ He added that the event is not merely a celebration but represents a historic journey of 86 years, leading humanity from darkness to light.
He also met the Dalai Lama and received his blessings. Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, Pema Sherpa, extended greetings to Tibetans living abroad and supporters worldwide. Members of the Philippine Parliament were also present as special guests.
On Monday, the 14th Dalai Lama attended a long-life prayer at the main Tibetan temple, organized by former Tibetan political prisoners and the Lhasa Boys Association. Sonam from Australia said she was present to participate in prayers for the well-being of former political prisoners and their families.
