In Katthar village of Kuthad Panchayat, Nithar sub-tehsil, Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, a man allegedly set a girl’s house on fire after his marriage proposal was rejected. The police have arrested the accused, Pankaj Sharma, and seized his car. He was presented in court on Sunday and sent on a three-day police remand.
According to police and family statements, on Friday night around 10:30 PM, Rajesh Kumar, his wife, and daughter were asleep after dinner when flames suddenly appeared on the outer walls of their house. A neighbor woman noticed the fire and raised an alarm, allowing the family to escape in time. Villagers helped control the fire after a struggle.
The fire destroyed valuable deodar wood stored in the house, apple crates, plastic bundles, fuel wood, and electrical meter wiring. The accused fled the scene in his car after committing the crime.
Police said that Pankaj Sharma had been pressuring the girl’s family for marriage. When the family refused, he threatened to burn the entire family alive if his proposal was rejected. He carried out his threat on Friday night.
SP Kullu Madan Lal confirmed that legal action is underway against the accused.
