Political Heat Rises Over Himachal’s Lone Rajya Sabha Seat
Political activity has intensified in Himachal Pradesh over its lone Rajya Sabha seat. With the election schedule announced, both the ruling Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party have begun working on their strategies.
The BJP is expected to follow its 2024 approach by announcing its candidate only after the Congress finalizes its nominee. Party insiders suggest that if Congress fields an outsider, the BJP may raise the issue of “Himachal pride” and attempt to influence political equations, including the possibility of cross-voting.
2024 Episode Back in Focus
The 2024 Rajya Sabha election remains a key reference point. Despite Congress having 40 MLAs, BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan secured victory after a dramatic tie and a draw of lots. The election led to subsequent bypolls on nine seats.
Currently, Congress holds 40 MLAs while BJP has 28 in the Assembly. Nevertheless, BJP appears keen to make the contest politically significant. Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur stated that discussions are underway and a decision will be taken soon.
Congress Weighs Its Options
Congress leadership is carefully deliberating over its nominee. Learning from its previous experience of fielding an outsider, the party may opt for a Himachal-based leader this time. Names such as Anand Sharma, Pratibha Singh, and Kaul Singh Thakur are reportedly under consideration.
Political observers believe the election is not just about one seat but also about sending a broader political message. A fresh wave of political activity is expected once Congress announces its candidate.
