Four-Wheelers Identified as Major Cause of Road Accidents in Shimla, Two-Wheeler Riders Most Affected: Report

Traffic Rule Violations Major Cause of Road Accidents in Shimla District, 78% Crashes Due to Human Negligence

Traffic rule violations have emerged as the leading cause of road accidents in Shimla district. An investigation by the Police and Transport Department revealed that 78 percent of road accidents last year were caused by drunk driving, overspeeding, wrong overtaking, and driving in the wrong lane. These accidents claimed 77 lives.

In 2025, a total of 268 road accidents were reported in the district, resulting in 102 deaths and 436 serious injuries. The analysis shows that rural areas recorded significantly more accidents than urban areas, with 194 accidents in rural regions compared to 74 in urban areas.

The peak time for road accidents was identified as 6 pm to 12 midnight in urban areas, while in rural areas it was between 3 pm and 9 pm. Due to behavioral violations alone, 208 road accidents were recorded.

Among police station areas, Baluganj recorded the highest number with 40 accidents and 10 deaths. Rohru reported 33 accidents with 8 fatalities, New Shimla saw 21 accidents with 6 deaths, Theog reported 21 accidents resulting in 7 deaths, and Kumarsain recorded 18 accidents with 10 fatalities.

On National Highways, 114 road accidents were reported, resulting in 15 deaths and 207 injuries. State Highways witnessed 27 accidents with 21 fatalities, while rural and other link roads accounted for the highest toll with 129 accidents and 60 deaths.

Although stricter enforcement by the police has led to a reduction in accidents, traffic rule violations continue to claim many lives each year. To address this, the Police, Transport Department, and other agencies have launched special road safety awareness campaigns across the district.
