Vimal Negi Death Case: Suspended ASI Pankaj Sharma Arrested by CBI for Evidence Tampering
In a major development in the mysterious death case of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation’s Chief Engineer Vimal Negi, the CBI on Sunday arrested suspended ASI Pankaj Sharma on charges of tampering with evidence. This marks the first arrest in the case since the CBI took over the investigation. On Monday, Sharma was produced before the special CBI court.
ASI Pankaj Sharma Had Alleged Illegal Surveillance
Prior to his arrest, Sharma had filed a petition in the Himachal Pradesh High Court claiming he was being illegally surveilled and denied access to government accommodation. On September 5, the court allowed him to return home, stating that there was no threat to his life as per CBI and state government submissions.
High Court Expressed Doubt on SIT, Trusted CBI
The High Court criticized the SIT for failing to make significant progress in over two months and expressed hope that the CBI would carry out a fair and speedy investigation. Due to disagreements between the DGP and the SIT, the case was transferred to the CBI.
