Landslide in Himachal's Kullu Kills Five of a Family in Nirmand's Shamarni Village
Kullu (Himachal Pradesh):
In a tragic incident, a massive landslide struck Shamarni village in Nirmand, Kullu district, at around 1:30 AM on Monday night, claiming the lives of five members of the same family. The landslide hit the house of Shiv Ram, tearing off the roof and burying his family under the debris while they were asleep.
Among the deceased were Shiv Ram’s wife, son, daughter-in-law, and two young grandchildren. The intensity of the incident was such that the victims had no time to react. The village has been plunged into mourning, with five funeral pyres burning together—a sight that left everyone in tears.
Injured Kala Devi recounts the horror:
Kala Devi, who sustained injuries, shared that the family had no warning as the landslide hit during the night while they were asleep. Her husband, Dharmdas, woke her up just before a rock struck her head. When they rushed outside, they saw their home destroyed and covered in rubble.
Rescue efforts and aftermath:
Local residents, risking their own lives, started rescue operations before authorities arrived. Of the eight individuals inside the house, three were successfully saved. By 6 AM, police, administration, home guards, and villagers intensified the search. By 11:40 AM, the NDRF personnel from Kotla had retrieved the last body from the landslide wreckage.
This tragedy is part of a series of similar incidents in the region during this monsoon season, which has caused significant loss of life and property due to landslides.
