CPRI Shimla's Four New Potato Varieties Approved for Seed Production and Sale

New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has approved four new potato varieties developed by the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla, for seed production and commercial sale. These varieties—Kufri Ratan, Kufri Chipbharat-1, Kufri Chipbharat-2, and Kufri Tejas—have been officially notified based on the recommendation of the Central Seed Committee.

Kufri Ratan is a red-skinned potato variety suitable for the plains and plateau regions of North India. It is highly suitable for long-term storage.
Kufri Tejas is a nutrient-rich potato variety that can withstand high temperatures and is recommended for cultivation in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

Kufri Chipbharat-1 and Kufri Chipbharat-2 have been specifically developed for chips processing. They contain low sugar and offer better chip quality. Kufri Chipbharat-2 is suited for both North and South India and is ideal for long-term storage.

Dr. Brajesh Singh, Director of CPRI, said that two of these varieties are for direct consumption, while the other two are intended for processing. Kufri Chipbharat-1 and 2 will be licensed to companies for commercial use, and the institute has already received several requests in this regard.
