Himachal Pradesh to Become the Most Literate State in the Country, CM Sukhu to Make the Announcement Today
Shimla, September 8 (International Literacy Day):
Himachal Pradesh is set to mark a historic milestone today. On the occasion of International Literacy Day, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will officially declare the state as a “Fully Literate State.” The announcement will be made at 10:00 AM at the State Guest House, Peterhoff, Shimla. Education Minister Rohit Thakur, along with senior officials, the Secretary, and Director of the Education Department, will be present at the event.
Himachal Leads the Nation in Literacy
Although the national average literacy rate is 80.9%, Himachal Pradesh has impressively reached a literacy rate of 99.02%. With this achievement, the state has surpassed previously declared fully literate states like Mizoram (98.2%), Lakshadweep (97.3%), and Tripura (95.6%), positioning itself as the most literate state in India.
New Scheme Likely to Be Announced for 56,960 Remaining Illiterates
During the event, the Chief Minister may also announce a new scheme aimed at educating the remaining 56,960 illiterate individuals in the state. An online message from Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, will also be shared on the occasion.
Success Through Consistent Efforts
Himachal's estimated population stands at 75.05 lakh, of which only 56,960 individuals remain illiterate.
Key Literacy Campaigns and Achievements:
- Ullas Yojana (2023–25): 43,885 individuals made literate
- Read and Write Campaign (2022): 1,00,000 individuals made literate
- Saakshar Bharat Mission (2017): 67,500 individuals made literate
These numbers highlight the effectiveness of continuous and targeted literacy campaigns in the state.
