Technology: Charging Battery Chip to Be Designed in India, Three Major Institutions to Collaborate

India to Design Charging Battery Chip Locally; IIIT Una, IIT Kanpur & NIT Srinagar Join Hands

In a major step towards self-reliance in technology, India will soon design charging battery chips domestically for the automobile sector. This significant project will be executed in collaboration between IIIT Una, IIT Kanpur, and NIT Srinagar.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has recently approved a funding of ₹2.30 crore for the initiative. The project will be led by Dr. Tanu Vadera, Assistant Professor at IIIT Una, as the Principal Investigator (PI).

Key Highlights:

  • A joint team of electronics and computer science engineers will work on the chip design.
  • The development will be completed at cluster level within 1.5 years.
  • Indigenous manufacturing will lead to cost reduction and end dependence on imports, particularly from China.
  • The new chip will improve battery charging efficiency and lifespan.
  • M.Tech students from IIIT Una will also be involved in the project.

Key Project Contributors:

  • PI: Dr. Tanu Vadera
  • Co-PIs: Dr. Ankur Kumar, Dr. Naman Garg, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Dr. Mrityunjay Singh, Dr. Shatrughan Modi, Dr. Vejendla Kishore, Dr. Shivdutt Sharma, Dr. Ambigavati M., Dr. Naveen Cheggoju

Prof. Manish Gaud, Director of IIIT Una, stated that the project is being funded under the leadership of IIT Kanpur and aims to enable integrated development of semiconductor and digital technologies in the automobile sector.
