CM Sukhu Appeals to Punjab & Haryana: Act as Elder Brothers in Himachal’s Interests; Raises Concern Over Shanan Project, BBMB Dues
At the closing session of the two-day National Cooperative Conference held in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu raised serious concerns over the state being denied its legitimate rights. He highlighted the issue of the Shanan Hydroelectric Project, stating that despite the lease period having expired, Punjab has not returned the project to Himachal. Furthermore, BBMB dues remain unpaid due to objections from Punjab and Haryana, even after a Supreme Court ruling.
CM Sukhu urged Punjab and Haryana to act as "elder brothers" and support Himachal generously in the spirit of mutual cooperation.
Boost to Cooperative Movement and Rural Economy
The Chief Minister inaugurated the Cyber Security Operations Centre of the Himachal State Cooperative Bank, released a cooperative anthem, and a souvenir. He noted that there are over 5,000 active cooperative societies in the state, including 2,000 primary agricultural credit societies, which are playing a vital role in strengthening the rural economy.
Education, Healthcare, and Anti-Corruption Measures
Sukhu emphasized the improvements in education under his government. Himachal has now secured 5th rank in national education rankings for 2025, a significant rise from the 21st position during the previous BJP government.
In the health sector, Rs. 300 crore worth of modern medical equipment is being installed in major hospitals, and robotic surgery has been launched in two public institutions.
Development Unhindered Despite Natural Calamities
The CM said the state has suffered losses worth Rs. 20,000 crore due to natural disasters, but development continues uninterrupted. He also appreciated the local people's efforts during the Manimahesh Yatra, where 16,000 stranded pilgrims were safely rescued and supported with food and aid.
Support for Women, Farmers, and Natural Farming
CM Sukhu said women self-help groups are being empowered under the "Him Ira" brand, and after a historic increase of Rs. 21 per litre in milk prices, milk procurement has risen to 2.5 lakh litres per day, boosting farmers’ incomes. Natural farming is being promoted with support prices, and women and youth groups are being involved in forest conservation.
