Himachal Pradesh to Build First 500-Meter Box Tunnel at ₹250 Crore, Set to Ease Traffic Congestion

Himachal's First Box Tunnel to Be Built at Thalout on Kiratpur-Manali Four-Lane Highway

Mandi, Himachal Pradesh – In a major infrastructure development, Himachal Pradesh is set to get its first-ever box tunnel. The tunnel will be constructed at Thalout on the strategically important Kiratpur-Manali four-lane highway, with an estimated cost of ₹250 crore. Spanning 500 meters, this artificial tunnel will bypass the congested Thalout market area, offering daily commuters significant relief from traffic jams.

NHAI Sends Proposal to Ministry
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has studied the local conditions and identified serious landslide risks in the area. Based on this, the authority has proposed the box tunnel project to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Once approved, construction work will begin as per guidelines.

Why a Box Tunnel?
Geo-tagging and structural assessments have revealed that the strata in the Thalout area are unstable, and there is a persistent threat of landslides. To ensure safety, the box tunnel will be accompanied by a strong protective wall to prevent debris from reaching residential zones.

Traffic to Be Diverted via Aut Tunnel
A new tunnel in nearby Aut has already been completed. Once the Thalout box tunnel is operational, traffic will be rerouted through the new Aut tunnel, easing pressure on Thalout market. Additionally, the old Aut tunnel will be modernized with upgraded facilities.

What is a Box Tunnel?
Unlike traditional tunnels that are carved through mountains, box tunnels are constructed in open areas using concrete in a box-like structure. Though more expensive, this method is safer in high-risk zones. This will be the first use of box tunnel technology in any four-lane project in Himachal.

Project Director Varun Chari, NHAI PIU Mandi, said:
"Considering the situation in Thalout, the box tunnel has been proposed. Work will begin as soon as the ministry approves the project."
