Himachal Pradesh Government Downgrades 28 Government Schools, Notification Issued
The Himachal Pradesh government has officially downgraded 28 government schools due to low student enrollment. As per the education department's notification issued on Wednesday, these schools had five or fewer students enrolled as of September 18, 2025.
The move affects 12 Government Senior Secondary Schools (GSSS), which have now been downgraded to High Schools, and 16 Government High Schools (GHS), which have been converted to Middle Schools (GMS).
According to the Notification:
Separate guidelines will be issued regarding the transfer of current staff, official records, stock items, sanctioned posts, buildings, and land. Students enrolled in these institutions will be shifted to nearby or preferred schools.
List of GSSS downgraded to High Schools:
- Bhaura (Kangra)
- Chambi (Mandi)
- Kotgarh, Jubbar, Damyana, Bosari, Ratnari, Kadiwan, Jheena, Barach, Baghal (all Shimla)
- Barwas (Sirmaur)
List of GHS downgraded to Middle Schools (GMS):
- Gharna (Kangra)
- Traswan (Mandi)
- Malhoti (Sirmaur)
- Lingjar, Chanog, Munish, Bral, Alawang, Kuhal, Kanda, Jarashi, Janahan, Gaiha, Kacheri, Nagan, Gahan (all Shimla)
This decision highlights the state government's efforts to rationalize resources and improve the efficiency of school management in areas with very low student populations.
