Manali: BRO Working to Clear Snow from Rohtang, Tourists to Visit Soon; Tourism to Get a Boost

Rohtang Pass Covered in Snow Early This Year, BRO Begins Clearing Roads; Tourist Access Expected Soon

Situated at an altitude of 13,050 feet above sea level, the famous Rohtang Pass is covered in snow nearly a month earlier than usual this year. A thick layer of about three feet of snow has blanketed the pass, creating a mesmerizing winter landscape.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has begun clearing snow from the road, raising hopes that tourists will soon be allowed to visit the snow-covered region. Currently, tourists are only being allowed up to a short distance beyond Marhi.

Rohtang Pass is officially closed to traffic after November 15 every year. However, this year, heavy snowfall in early October has led to early closure conditions. Snowfall has also been recorded in nearby areas including Sissu, Atal Tunnel, and Kokhsar.

This early snowfall has breathed new life into Manali’s tourism industry, with local businesses expressing optimism. BRO has already cleared snow up to Rohtang Top, though work is still ongoing on the Kokhsar side.

Manali DSP K.D. Sharma confirmed after inspection that snow removal on the Kokhsar side is pending. Only after its completion will tourists be permitted to cross Rohtang Pass.
