Himachal's Apple Trade Sees Record 43% Growth Despite Disasters; Horticulture Emerges as Economic Backbone
Shimla: Despite facing natural calamities, landslides, and road blockages this year, Himachal Pradesh has recorded an impressive 43% increase in apple trade compared to 2024. According to the State Agricultural Marketing Board, by October 3, 2025, a total of 2,60,83,458 apple boxes were traded, compared to 1,82,63,874 boxes in 2024.
A state government spokesperson stated that 2025 marks a golden chapter in Himachal's horticulture history. The transparent and farmer-centric governance of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has brought significant transformation to the horticulture sector.
Himachal apples were in high demand at Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi, where A-grade Royal Delicious sold at ₹2,300 per 20kg box, and Golden Delicious at ₹1,200 per box—a testament to the quality, brand value, and trust in Himachal’s produce.
Under the Market Intervention Scheme, HPMC made a record purchase of 83,788 metric tonnes of apples this year—one of the highest ever—providing major relief to thousands of growers.
Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi highlighted the government’s priority for farmers' welfare, citing quick road restoration, transport access, and efficient market operations as key enablers for fair and timely returns.
He also confirmed that under the Integrated Horticulture Development Mission, Himachal received the first installment of ₹25 crore, comprising ₹22.50 crore from the Centre and ₹2.50 crore from the State.
