Himachal Pradesh:Flash Flood in Jahalma Stream, Lahaul-Spiti Triggers Extensive Damage and Threatens Lindur Village
A flash flood in the Jahalma stream of Udaipur subdivision, Lahaul-Spiti district, has caused extensive damage. Heavy debris and water have swept away irrigation pipes and uprooted several trees, severely affecting irrigation systems in the area.
According to reports, a glacier broke off from a nearby mountain on Wednesday, blocking the stream flow near Lindur village and forming a temporary lake. On Friday, intense sunlight caused the water level to rise rapidly, and the lake suddenly burst, resulting in a massive flood downstream.
The flood has damaged irrigation channels (kuhls) in Taljon, Kothi, Phuda, Jahalma, and Halin villages. Farmers and orchard owners are now worried about how they will irrigate their fields.
The Jahalma stream flows directly below Lindur village, which is already experiencing land subsidence. With ongoing soil erosion, the risk to the village has increased significantly.
Authorities have advised residents to maintain a safe distance from rivers and streams. Locals are sharing updates and assessing damage through phone calls and mobile communication.
