Proposal to Declare Cloudburst and Landslide in Himachal as National Disaster Passed Unanimously in Assembly
On the ninth day of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly’s monsoon session, a proposal to declare the damage caused by cloudburst, heavy rainfall, and landslides as a national disaster was passed unanimously.The proposal will now be submitted to the central government. While the opposition supported it, they created a disruption when Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi stood up to address the house. All BJP MLAs raised slogans and moved to the well area of the house.
Harshvardhan Chauhan, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, formally submitted the proposal to the house in accordance with Rule 102. Members from both ruling and opposition sides shared details of the damage in their respective constituencies. After the discussion on the disaster ended, when the Revenue Minister began briefing on the losses and government relief efforts, the opposition created a ruckus.
Jagat Singh Negi stated that the opposition is not standing with the disaster victims but misleading the public. He said that relief materials are being distributed to all affected and people have been shifted to safe places. He also mentioned efforts to send a disaster relief package proposal to the center in 2023, which was allegedly blocked by the opposition.
Both ruling and opposition parties agreed that rampant construction and uncontrolled cutting are the major reasons for the disaster and stressed the need for concrete measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
