Civic Body Elections Can Be Deferred for Up to Two Years, Amendment Bills Tabled
The Himachal Pradesh government has moved to allow postponement of elections for municipal corporations and councils for up to two years from their formation. On Thursday, Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh introduced the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Amendment Bill 2025 and the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Amendment Bill 2025 in the state assembly.
These bills propose that elections in newly formed municipal bodies can now be held within two years of their establishment. The statement of objectives and reasons clarified that due to the recent formation of several new bodies, it is currently not feasible to hold immediate elections because of the lack of basic infrastructure and financial resources.
Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri introduced the Himachal Pradesh Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill 2025, intended to bring the state's GST framework in line with recent amendments made by the central government.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur also introduced two important bills:
- IEC India Education Centre University (Establishment and Regulation Repeal) Bill 2025
- Himachal Pradesh Prohibition of Alteration in Public Utilities Bill 2025 (to be tabled on Friday)
