Financial Hardship Threatens Medal Dream of Kangra Runner Nancy, Participation in Junior National Athletic Meet Uncertain
Nancy Chaudhary, a runner from Kangra district dreaming of winning medals for Himachal Pradesh and India, is facing financial difficulties that may prevent her from competing. Recently, Nancy won the gold medal in the 1,500-meter race at the 6th North Zone Junior Athletics Championship 2025 held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. She has now been selected to participate in the National Junior Athletic Meet in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Nancy, who hails from Tappa village in Palampur tehsil, lacks the Rs. 20,000 needed to travel to Bhubaneswar and may be forced to skip the event. Her mother is a multitask worker with limited income, unable to support Nancy’s sports expenses. Previously, local support helped Nancy compete in various state and national events, but that assistance has dwindled.
Vikram Chaudhary, president of the Kangra District Athletics Association, said the government has not provided any budget for the last four years. He added that efforts will be made to raise funds to support Nancy and another athlete, Aditi, who won a silver medal in the 800-meter race at the same championship, so they can participate in the Bhubaneswar meet.
