Setback for APL Families in Himachal: 1 Kg Cut in Wheat Quota, Uncertainty Over Oil and Pulses
This month in Himachal Pradesh, the government has implemented a 1-kilogram reduction in the wheat quota provided to Above Poverty Line (APL) families, including those who pay income tax, under the Public Distribution System (PDS). Previously, each ration cardholder received 14 kilograms of wheat, but now the allocation has been decreased to 13 kilograms.
This reduction has caused concern among APL families, especially amid ongoing uncertainty regarding the availability of mustard oil and chana dal (split chickpeas). Last month, these items were also unavailable at ration depots, forcing people to buy them at higher market prices.
There has been no change in the rice quota, which remains at 6 kg per ration card.
Ration Card Data in the State:
- Total ration card holders: 19,44,164
- Total beneficiaries: 68,76,042
- APL ration cards: 11,98,130 (Beneficiaries: 40,47,391)
- NFSA ration cards: 7,46,034 (Beneficiaries: 28,28,651)
Shiv Ram Rahi, the District Controller of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs in Hamirpur, stated that APL ration cardholders will be provided with 13 kilograms of wheat this month. He also confirmed that there has been no change in the rice quota, which will continue as before.
