First Interstitial Brachytherapy for Tongue and Breast Cancer Successfully Conducted at AIIMS Bilaspur – Know the Full Details

Historic Advancement in Cancer Treatment by AIIMS Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh

Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh: AIIMS Bilaspur has marked a landmark achievement in cancer care by successfully administering interstitial brachytherapy to patients with tongue and breast cancer for the very first time. This cutting-edge treatment offers precise, targeted radiation, improving outcomes while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. This advanced technique delivers precise radiation directly to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissues.

The first case involved a 47-year-old patient from Mandi diagnosed with stage-2 tongue cancer. Traditional surgery risked partial removal of the tongue, but the patient opted for brachytherapy to preserve the organ. High-dose radiation was precisely administered through thin catheters directly into the tumor, ensuring the patient’s speech and swallowing functions remained intact.

The second case was a 37-year-old woman from Bilaspur diagnosed with stage-2 breast cancer. She underwent breast-conserving surgery combined with interstitial brachytherapy, ensuring targeted radiation to the tumor while protecting the heart and lungs.

AIIMS Secretary Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh stated that this achievement offers new hope to early-stage head, neck, and breast cancer patients in Himachal. Now, patients no longer need to travel outside the state for advanced treatment, saving time and expenses.

The procedures were led by AIIMS Executive Director Prof. Dr. D.N. Sharma, with a multidisciplinary team including specialists in radiation oncology, ENT, surgical oncology, anesthesia, and medical physics contributing to the successful outcomes.
