World Senior Citizens Day: Himachal's Elderly Choosing Family Over Old Age Homes

Himachal: The Safest Haven for the Elderly, Over 4,000 Cross Age of 100

While the demand for old-age homes is rising in other parts of India, Himachal Pradesh presents a contrasting and inspiring picture. Here, the elderly are nurtured within families, living long, healthy, and active lives. Out of nine old age homes operating in the state, only 228 residents are currently housed, most of whom are from other states.

Himachal has a senior citizen population of over 7.5 lakh (60+ years), receiving monthly social security pensions. They also enjoy prioritized access to healthcare and public transportation. The average life expectancy here is 74 years, with more than 4,000 seniors surpassing 100 years of age.

The combination of unpolluted air, organic food, and an active routine keeps Himachal’s older population fit and mentally alert. Many still plough fields, take care of cattle, and handle daily chores themselves.

Deep-rooted values like "Serving one’s parents is the greatest virtue" continue to shape the state’s approach to elderly care, making Himachal a model for the rest of the nation in true social security.
