Row Over ASEAN Being Called China's B-Team, Congress Says Another Blow to Foreign Policy

Goyal’s ‘B-Team of China’ Remark Sparks Tension with ASEAN, Congress Slams Government Over Diplomatic Fallout
Tensions have escalated between India and ASEAN following a controversial remark by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who referred to Southeast Asian nations as the "B-Team of China." The statement has drawn strong criticism from ASEAN leaders.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, posting on X (formerly Twitter), condemned the remark, calling it "unfortunate and avoidable." He noted that India shares deep historical, cultural, economic, and political ties with ASEAN’s 10 member nations, including Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.
"ASEAN’s collective economy is only slightly smaller than India’s. Insulting such a crucial regional bloc is a setback for Indian diplomacy," Ramesh added.
Earlier, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma had also termed the remark "irresponsible and insulting," warning that such language could undermine decades of trust and strategic partnership between India and ASEAN.
