Good News for Apple Growers: Minimum Import Price Set at ₹80, Notification Awaited

Relief for Apple Growers: Minimum Import Price Raised from ₹50 to ₹80 per Kg

Shimla, July 5, 2025 – In a significant decision aimed at protecting domestic apple growers, the Central Government has increased the Minimum Import Price (MIP) of apples from ₹50 per kg to ₹80 per kg. This move is expected to curb the influx of cheaper foreign apples and ensure fair returns for apple farmers, particularly in Himachal Pradesh.

According to grower organizations, an official notification regarding the new MIP is expected within a day or two. Once implemented, the price of imported apples in India could rise to ₹130 per kg after including import duties, giving a competitive edge to local produce.

Lokendra Singh Bisht, President of the Progressive Growers Association, stated that the organization has been demanding an increase in MIP for a long time. While their demand was ₹100 per kg, even this ₹30 hike will provide substantial relief to growers.

Rajiv Chauhan, President of the Himachal Apple Growers Society, confirmed that the issue was raised with the Commerce and Agriculture Ministries and that they have now received written confirmation of the price revision.

Harish Chauhan, Convenor of the Sanyukt Kisan Manch, expressed concern that although MIP was fixed at ₹50 per kg in 2023, it was never properly enforced. He also urged the government to clarify its stance on the Trump Tariffs scheduled to take effect from July 9, amid speculations of possible zero import duty on apples.

Chetan Singh Bragta, BJP spokesperson in Himachal Pradesh, hailed the decision as "historic" and "pro-farmer." In a press briefing, he credited the Modi government for taking a bold and visionary step to support apple growers across the country.
