Major Crackdown on Drugs in Himachal Within Three Months: CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu
In a decisive move to tackle the escalating drug issue, the Himachal Pradesh government is set to roll out a comprehensive anti-drug campaign over the coming three months. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the initiative will target drug traffickers at the grassroots level and involve coordinated efforts across law enforcement and community platforms. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced this during the prize distribution ceremony of the 12th Half Marathon organized by Himachal Police in Shimla on Sunday.
The Chief Minister revealed that mapping of drug peddlers is being conducted at the panchayat level, and detailed reports have been sought from the police. A special task force is being formed, and the recruitment process for 500 constable posts is already underway. The police manual will also be revised to ensure accountability.
A state-level model de-addiction and rehabilitation centre with a 100-bed capacity will be constructed this year in Kotla Barog, Pachhad subdivision, Sirmaur district. The centre, being built at a cost of ₹5.34 crore, will offer recreational facilities, a library, a gym, and spaces for meditation and yoga.
CM Sukhu emphasized a dual strategy in the war against drugs—strict legal action against traffickers and a compassionate approach toward victims for their rehabilitation into mainstream society.
The government has enforced the PIT-NDPS Act, which was pending for five years under the previous BJP regime. Of the 40 detention orders approved, 36 have already been executed this year. Properties of seven drug traffickers have been demolished, and more actions are in the pipeline. The Himachal Pradesh Anti-Drugs Act has been enacted to distinctly separate drug offenders from those battling addiction, ensuring targeted action and compassionate rehabilitation.
The Chief Minister voiced concern over the apparent lack of commitment from certain Superintendents of Police in the anti-drug mapping efforts and highlighted troubling reports of some police personnel allegedly being involved in drug trafficking. He has instructed the DGP to prepare a list of such officials and employees with questionable integrity.
He urged parents to maintain open communication with their children and protect them from falling into drug addiction.
