Monsoon Hits Delhi: Pleasant Weather After Rains, IMD Forecast Falls Short
After 8–10 days of uncertainty, the monsoon finally arrived in Delhi-NCR on Sunday, bringing relief from scorching heat and humidity. The day started with overcast skies, followed by heavy showers in the afternoon. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for Sunday and an orange alert until 9 PM.
According to IMD, between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on Sunday, Delhi recorded 5.1 mm of rainfall. The maximum temperature dropped to 32.8°C — 4.4°C below normal — making it the lowest for June this year. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.8°C.
Rainfall varied across different parts of the city:
Mayur Vihar: 23 mm (highest)
Palam: 13.6 mm
Aya Nagar: 9.9 mm
Safdarjung Observatory: only a trace
Temperature highlights from key stations:
Lodhi Road and Aya Nagar: Max 32.6°C
Palam: Max 32.4°C
Ridge Area: Min 24.2°C
However, this year, the IMD's prediction regarding the monsoon's arrival in Delhi proved inaccurate. Initially expected around June 22–25, forecasts kept shifting daily, with no mention on June 26. Eventually, the monsoon arrived on June 30, nine days ahead of the nationwide normal coverage date of July 8.
Forecast for Monday:
Skies will remain mostly cloudy with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms.Temperatures are likely to hover around 32°C during the day and 24°C at night. A yellow alert remains in place.
