If Himachal does not exercise caution and take appropriate steps, it could also face a dengue outbreak. This revelation comes from a study conducted by a team of doctors from the Department of Health and Family Welfare. Health experts have emphasized the need to be more vigilant about dengue. The study, led by Dr. Ekta Sharma from the department, was conducted in Kangra district. Dr. Sharma, along with Dr. Tarun Sood, Dr. Gurmeet Katoch, and Dr. Rajesh Guleri, analyzed data from the district's Integrated Disease Surveillance Program cell. Covering a period of six years from 2017 to 2022, the study found 6008 suspected cases of dengue in Kangra.
According to the experts, about 7% of these cases tested positive, meaning 441 people were diagnosed with dengue. The study found a higher prevalence of dengue among men, with the average age of diagnosed cases being 37.7 years. A concerning seasonal trend was identified in the study, with a pattern of dengue cases emerging from the end of August to November each year. The study concluded by warning health officials that dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease, which can range from mild fever to a potentially lethal condition. While previously considered a tropical disease, the increasing presence of dengue in the sub-Himalayan region underscores the need for immediate action.
The study highlights the necessity for better preparation and increased awareness regarding vector-borne disease control programs. Focusing efforts in the post-monsoon period can significantly prevent future outbreaks. The research team recommended strengthening surveillance systems and implementing targeted interventions to control the population of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary vector of dengue infection. Community education campaigns promoting preventive measures such as the use of mosquito nets and repellents could be crucial in reducing the spread of the disease. By acknowledging the rising trend of dengue cases and taking proactive measures, Himachal Pradesh can effectively combat this public health threat and protect the well-being of its citizens.
