HRTC Conductors can issue tickets using mobile phones, passengers can pay using card swipes or QR codes.

In the near future, bus conductors will be able to issue tickets using mobile phones, making the process more cost-effective. This technology will benefit both government and private bus operators. The transport department has already begun working on this initiative and has engaged with a private company that has presented a demonstration of the system.

According to department officials, the technology involves software that can be downloaded onto a mobile device. The software will have pre-loaded information about all stations, distances, and fares. The mobile device will connect to a small printer, allowing conductors to generate tickets for the relevant station, which will be printed instantly. The printer is compact enough to be carried in a small bag, similar to e-ticketing devices, making it convenient for conductors to use. Notably, passengers will also have the option to pay fares using QR codes or card swipes.

The cost of implementing this new technology is expected to be just around ₹1,500 per bus, compared to the current e-ticketing machines that cost between ₹25,000 to ₹30,000. This significant cost difference has led to limited adoption of e-ticketing machines, especially in districts like Shimla. Many operators find the existing machines too expensive. Therefore, the transport department is focusing on this new plan, which could provide a more affordable alternative for private bus operators and offer passengers the convenience of online payment options. However, it is not yet decided whether this system will be made available only to private operators or will also be introduced in HRTC buses.

Discussions are underway with a private firm regarding the mobile ticketing plan. The company has provided an initial presentation, and the technology appears to be a cost-effective solution. It is expected to particularly benefit private operators and offer passengers online payment options. Further steps will be taken once approval is received from higher authorities, said Anil Kumar Sharma, Regional Transport Officer, Shimla.
